Will a Gas Geyser Work With Low Water Pressure?

Why do gas geysers care about water pressure?
Because they are flow-sensing devices. The unit will not light until it detects enough water moving through it, which is a safety feature — it stops the burner firing into a pipe with no water in it.
Weak flow means one of two things happens. Either the unit never lights at all and you get cold water no matter how long you wait, or it lights and then drops out partway through a shower as the flow wavers. Homeowners describe it as "not clicking" or "cutting out", and both descriptions point at the same question: is enough water actually reaching the unit?
Note the difference between pressure and flow. Pressure is the push in the pipe; flow is how many litres a minute actually arrive at the geyser. A restricted filter or an undersized pipe can leave you with decent pressure at the meter and poor flow at the unit.
Which gas geyser is best for low pressure?

- Its honest limits. It is not a whole-house premium unit. Do not expect it to run two showers and a kitchen tap, hold rock-steady temperature on mixers, or work inline after a solar tank. For that you want a Paloma or Rinnai and the pressure to feed it.
- It needs a cover. Battery units must be protected from rain and coastal moisture, or the board and loom corrode.
What if my pressure is fine but the geyser still cuts out?
Then something between the mains and the burner is choking the flow, or the unit is not reading it properly. That is a diagnosis job, not a guessing job.
- A blocked flow sensor or spinner — grit and scale build up on it and the unit stops seeing the flow.
- A dirty inlet filter, which is one of the most common findings on a unit that has run for a few years.
- Pipe layout: long runs, tight bends, or an undersized feed shared by too many outlets.
- Municipal fluctuation at peak times, which makes the fault look intermittent and random.
- A tired regulator or low cylinder on the gas side, which reads to the homeowner like a water problem.

Can anything else help?
Yes, and some of it costs nothing. Before you spend money on a new unit, get the basics of the water side right.
- Clean the inlet filters. On the geyser and at the taps. Grit from municipal work is a regular culprit after roadworks in the area.
- Check municipal pressure at different times. If it is fine at 10am and hopeless at 7am, you are chasing a supply pattern, not a faulty geyser.
- Get the pipe sizing right. A 20mm feed to the unit instead of 16mm makes a real difference where two outlets are used together.
- Shorten and simplify the run. Long, convoluted pipework loses both flow and heat. Mounting the unit closer to the main bathroom is often the cheapest improvement available.
